Using KL’s MRT and LRT in a wheelchair

With a Rapid Mesra Pass, registered OKU travellers ride Rapid KL trains and buses free. Facilities differ from line to line, so this guide covers what is promised, what users report, and what to do when a station lets you down.

Key points

  • The Rapid Mesra Pass, formerly the OKU Smile Pass, gives registered Malaysian OKU cardholders free rides.1
  • You must keep at least RM5 on the card, or the gates will not open.1
  • Your companion pays the normal fare.1
  • MRT stations list lifts, ramps and accessible toilets, but users report gaps at some older stations and the monorail.23
  • Rapid Mobility is a door-to-door van with a hydraulic lift.4

Your right to use public transport

Section 27 of the Persons with Disabilities Act 2008 gives persons with disabilities the right to access and use public transport facilities, amenities and services on an equal basis with others. It also requires the Government and transport providers to take necessary measures so that these conform to universal design.5

Getting the Rapid Mesra Pass

The pass gives unlimited free rides on Rapid KL LRT, MRT, Monorail, BRT, Rapid KL buses and MRT feeder buses.6 It also covers Rapid On-Demand vans in the Klang Valley and Penang.1 You need a JKM OKU card first. If you do not have one, start with our OKU card guide.

  • Go in person. Nobody can apply at the counter for you, because staff take your photo there.1
  • Check the days. Both Rapid KL counters open Monday to Friday and close on weekends and public holidays. There is a Friday rest time from 12.30pm to 2.30pm.1
  • Already have an OKU concession card? Activation is free at any Rapid KL LRT, MRT, Monorail or BRT station, or at selected bus hubs.1

Rules that catch people out

  • A new card comes with RM5 loaded. Keep at least RM5 in the Touch ’n Go purse, even though the ride is free. Below that, you cannot pass the gates or board the bus.1
  • Always tap in and tap out. If you forget, money is deducted from the card.1
  • Use the pass regularly. If it becomes inactive, you must apply again and pay RM10, with no free RM5 this time.1
  • It only works in its own region. A Rapid KL pass does not work out of state.1
  • It is only for the cardholder. Companions buy a normal token or pass, and misuse gets the card blacklisted.1

What stations offer

MRT Corp publishes a facilities list for each MRT station. Titiwangsa and Pavilion Bukit Bintang, for example, both list lifts, ramp access, disabled-friendly toilets, low lift buttons and low counters for wheelchair users, tactile tiles, braille on lift buttons, and staff to provide assistance.27

Rapid KL’s Bike & Ride rules show that trains have a dedicated wheelchair area. Cyclists may park there, but they must give priority to wheelchair users and people with disabilities, and people with disabilities also get priority at the lifts.8

Where people still get stuck

Official lists tell you what was built, not what the journey is like. A 2023 Universiti Malaya study held focus groups with 20 people from five groups, including four with physical disabilities. The sample is small, but the problems they raised are worth planning around:3

  • The gap between platform and train. Participants described an unsafe gap, and one said the monorail gap is very big.
  • Missing lifts. Participants raised a lack of lifts, especially at older stations.
  • No information about your destination. One participant explained that not knowing the gap at the other end stops people from travelling at all.
  • Too few staff on platforms. All respondents said on-site help is needed.

What we could not find. We found no official live list of lifts out of service, and no published way to book a ramp or staff help in advance. Please ask Rapid KL directly, using the contacts below.

How to plan around it

These are our suggestions, not official rules.

  • Check the facilities list for both your start and end stations before you leave.
  • Ask the station staff before you tap in, not on the platform. Tell them where you are getting off.
  • Build in time for a lift being busy or not working, and know the next station along.
  • If this is your first trip on a line, try it with someone else, outside the rush hour.

When the train will not work: Rapid Mobility

Rapid Mobility is a door-to-door service for people with mobility aids. Its vans have a hydraulic lift that brings a wheelchair user on board.94

  • Area: the Klang Valley, including Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, Ampang, Cheras, Kajang, Selayang and Seri Kembangan.4
  • Fare: listed at RM7 per trip for one disabled passenger and one assistant. You pay any tolls and parking.4
  • Availability: Rapid lists only two vans, so book early.4

Confirm the fare and how to book before you rely on it. The contact numbers below can direct you.

KTM Komuter

KTM Komuter is run separately from Rapid KL. OKU cardholders get 50% off, currently only by buying at the ticket counter.10 The Rapid Mesra Pass does not apply, as it covers Prasarana-operated services.6
